Surf’s up for Henry

Meet Henry. When the mercury starts to rise, as it’s done with a vengeance in south-east Queensland this week, the hot go surfing. And Henry the sulphur-crested cockatoo was – once upon a time – no exception.

Henry was part of a menagerie owned by one of the Gold Coast’s characters of the 1980s, the Birdman of Surfers Paradise. He was well-known and well-photographed by tourists. This image, though, was taken by photographer Tommy Campion (and the surfing was his idea, not Henry’s).
