Birds of a feather…

A moment captured…a concerned bird in full flight attempting to unravel a length of string entwined in the branches of a Norfolk pine tree and attached to a leg of its mate. This amazing shot was taken by Australian photographer Tommy Campion on the Gold Coast – before the fire truck arrived to save the day.

Tommy tells it: “It just so happened that I was first on the spot. Scoop. I went up a few floors of a high-rise apartment building so I was level with the birds, then I talked my way inside. The building in the background is Jupiter’s Casino at Broadbeach. I used a dirty old Nikon, 300m at F8 with a beer in my hand.

“As the bird was about to be released, as a reward he gave the brave fireman a nasty peck on the pinky and took to the sky. Nature…isn’t it wonderful?”

The birds are Mangrove honeyeaters. (And I think the bit about the beer is Tommy’s sense of humour shining through…although with a photographer like him, I’d believe anything is possible!)
